Mossy Ridge Logworks was awesome to deal with. They built a great quality log home for us. Travis always had time to answer any of our numerous questions. They are true artists, love what they do and it shows in their product. We would highly recommend them if you are thinking about building a log home.

When I was enlisted to project manage a hybrid log home for a client of mine, I was apprehensive to say the least, not having experience with the unique aspects of this type of structure. After meeting with Travis and going back to him numerous times both previous to and during the build, I realized that he had a deep wealth of knowledge about log builds, he was always approachable and most helpful with all the details I needed to know. It felt like a team effort. Personally, as a general contractor with many years experience, I would highly recommend Mossy ridge. Travis delivered the log structure, assembled it, and paid attention to all the details, informing us as he constructed. He continues to be an approachable resource long after he has left the site. An all-around pleasant and rewarding experience for me and the homeowner.

what we do

Mossy Ridge Logworks offers a wide variety of products and services involving logs and/or timber. We provide custom built, hand crafted log home shells – from full scribe flared cedar to a more modern post and beam.  If squared timber is more your style, we build a wide range of timber frame styles – and of course we can build a more traditional style home using dovetail corners. Our product is the gorgeous shell for you to build upon. You will work with other parties to design and complete your home or cabin to your taste (inside and out). We will hand pick the log species (Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, Spruce, or Pine) and diameter to best match your location and design choices.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

  • Precut opening for windows and doors

  • Walls predrilled for electrical wiring and receptacles

  • Log walls slotted to accept intersecting framed walls

  • On site expertise for set up and integration with local contractors

  • All fastening hardware needed

  • Staining services provided on our site

  • Setup of our log or timber shell

    Things WE DO NOT PROVIDE

  • Complete (turn key) homes. You will need to hire a designer, general contractor, electrician, plumber, roofer, etc.

  • Shipping to location. We can certainly help with paperwork etc., but the cost of shipping and choice of shippers is handled by you.

  • Permits, engineering, foundation, interior or exterior finishing

We also provide restoration services.  If you have an existing log building that needs work we would love to come and have a look at it.  Please check out the short video of the old dovetail building that we restored and is now our office!

FULL SCRIBE

This is what is considered a traditional style log home. The frame of the house and the walls are made of full logs that are stacked horizontally on top of each other and are visible inside and out. The logs themselves provide the interior and exterior finish as well as insulation. Logs can be provided that flare out at the bottom to enhance the appearance. There is some maintenance required to keep the logs looking good over time. If you provide the upkeep, the logs will provide a beautiful home for generations to come.

POST & BEAM

Logs supply the main support to the structure of the walls, joists, beams, and roof. These are left as a design feature. The main building is completed by a contractor using more standard building materials.

TIMBER FRAME

Substituting timber (squared and planed wood) for the logs in the post and beam. Similar design with different aesthetics.

What To do next

These are general questions that will point you in the right direction for the type of home that fits you best and to help you determine if you are ready to choose your builder. When you are ready and are sure that a log or timber frame home is right for you, we will be happy to provide a quote and help make your dream a reality.

  1. Do you know your budget?

    a. How much are you comfortable spending?
    i. Does a cost of min $250 per sq foot work with both the amount of space you need and the amount you are willing to spend?
    b. Will you need financing?
    i. Have you investigated how construction loans work? They are not the same as a mortgage. The mortgage doesn’t happen until the construction is %100 complete. Speak to your bank to get specifics on how their construction loans work as each bank is different.

  2. Do you own the land you will be building on?

    a. Obviously, you need to have a place to put your house. The location may also dictate the size and orientation of your house.

    b. Do the bylaws restrict the type of home you can have? Are log homes acceptable?

  3. Have you talked to your insurance broker?

    a. Because they are constructed from whole logs, insurers view them differently and charge accordingly.

    b. Insurance while under construction is different than homeowner’s insurance. Talk to your broker or insurance company to see if they offer coverage.

  4. How involved do you want to be in the build? If you are going to be your own general contractor-hiring contractors for basement, heat, electrical, plumbing, etc. you will need to familiarize yourself with building codes and construction processes. Or will you be hiring a general contractor to take care of that? Do they have experience with log or timber homes?

  5. What is the most important thing(s) for you and your family to have in your new house?

    a. Exterior appearance/style?

    b. Interior appearance/style?

    c. Space/size?

    d. Resale value?

    e. Finishes?

    f. Knowing/trusting the contractor(s)?

    g. Cost of construction?

Ready for a quote? Provide as much detail as possible about your dream home and send it to travis@mossyridge.ca.

whether it is a 3,000sq.ft. dream home or a cabin getaway,
